How much does a website cost in South Africa? (2026 price guide)

Ask five web designers for a quote and you can get five answers between R2,000 and R60,000. Here is what South African websites actually cost in 2026, what drives the price, and how to tell which quote is worth paying.

How much does a website cost in South Africa: 2026 price guide
Quick answer

Most South African small businesses pay R5,000 to R20,000 once-off for a professionally built website, and R7,500 to R20,000 for an online store. A survey of 56 South African web design companies found an average of R6,633 for a five-page site and R8,445 for an ecommerce site. On top of the build, budget about R50 to R110 a year for a .co.za domain and around R100 a month for hosting.

Website pricing in South Africa looks chaotic because people are quoting for very different things. A R2,500 template and a R40,000 custom build are both called "a website", but they are not the same product, and they don't do the same job for your business.

This guide breaks the price down so you can compare quotes properly. All prices are in rand, sourced from South African agencies and surveys, and current for 2026.

What are you actually paying for?

The price of a website is mostly the price of time and thinking. Every quote should tell you which of these are included:

  • Strategy: who the site is for, what you want visitors to do, and how it fits your ads or search.
  • Copywriting: the words on the page. Often left out of cheap quotes, and the biggest reason sites don't convert.
  • Design: a template you fill in, or a layout designed around your business.
  • Build: making it work on phones, load fast and be easy to update.
  • Setup: contact forms, WhatsApp buttons, Google Analytics and conversion tracking, Google Business Profile links.
  • Search basics: page titles, descriptions and structure so Google understands the site.

Two quotes for "a five-page website" can differ by R10,000 simply because one includes the writing and tracking, and the other expects you to supply everything.

What does a website cost per month or per year?

The build is once-off, but a website has running costs. These are the ones to budget for:

Hosting± R107 / monthAverage in the 2026 SME Rocket survey. Cheaper shared plans exist; busy sites need more.
Maintenance plan (optional)± R399 / monthAverage monthly web design package. Updates, backups, small changes.
Shopify (online stores)US$29 – US$39 / monthBasic plan, billed in dollars, so the rand cost moves with the exchange rate.
Card payment fees (online stores)Roughly 3% per saleCharged by your payment gateway. Check the provider’s current rates.

Domain prices vary by registrar: some charge under R50 for the first year and around R100 to renew.[4][5] Shopify bills its plans in US dollars, so the rand cost changes with the exchange rate.[6]

A worked example: what will your first year cost?

Say you're quoted R12,000 for a five-page website. Here is the full first-year cost once the running costs are added:

Without a maintenance plan the first year comes to about R13,400. With one, about R18,200. From year two you only pay the running costs.

Why do website quotes vary so much?

Many providers advertise websites from as little as R2,000 to R5,000. These are usually template sites with limited customisation, little planning and minimal search optimisation.[3] That can be fine for a hobby or a placeholder. For a business that needs enquiries, the cheaper site often costs more in the long run.

The real question isn't what the website costs. It's what each new customer from the website costs.

A R3,000 site that brings in two enquiries a month is expensive. A R15,000 site that brings in fifteen is cheap. What makes the difference:

  • Speed on a phone. Google found that 53% of mobile visits are abandoned when a page takes more than three seconds to load.[7]
  • A clear next step. A call, WhatsApp or booking button that's obvious on every page.
  • Words written for your customer. What you do, who for, and why you, in the first few seconds.
  • Proof. Reviews, real photos, client logos and results.
  • Tracking. So you know which visits turn into enquiries, and from where.

Do you need a full website or just a landing page?

If you're running Google or Facebook ads, the page people land on matters more than the rest of the site. A landing page is a single page built for one offer and one action. It's cheaper than a full site (from about R2,000 to R4,000) and often converts better, because there's nothing to distract the visitor.

Many businesses need both: a website for credibility and search, and landing pages for their ads.

What should you ask before you pay?

  1. Who owns the domain and the site? The domain should be registered in your name.
  2. Is the copywriting included? If not, budget time or money to write it.
  3. Will it be fast on a phone? Ask to see their past sites on your own phone.
  4. Is tracking set up? Google Analytics, conversion tracking and form notifications.
  5. What does hosting cost after year one? Some low build prices are recovered through high hosting fees.
  6. How do changes work? Can you edit text yourself, and what do changes cost later?
  7. When will it be live? Most small business sites take one to four weeks.

What are the red flags in a website quote?

  • The domain is registered in the designer’s name, not yours.
  • No mention of mobile speed or how the site will perform on a phone.
  • You have to write every word yourself, but the price assumes a finished site.
  • Hosting is locked in at a high monthly fee you can’t move away from.
  • No contact form, WhatsApp button or tracking included.
  • No examples of live sites you can visit.
